Latter-day Lent

[Latter-day Lent] How do you Know? - Week 6: Thursday

This story of Hiram Page and his stone is tough. It shows how listening to the spirit is essential, and that you can sometimes be easily deceived. You have to be watchful.

Hiram found a stone, and was using to claim revelation for the church. Joseph, who had seer stones and used them to translate the Book of Mormon, had to tell Hiram he was in the wrong.

Hiram, likely wanting to be like Joseph Smith, didn't understand that he was in the grasp of Satan at this time. To his credit, Hiram and those who had believed him renounced the stone.

But this situation shares a deeper story.

To receive revelation from God, you have to know if it is from God or some other source.

So how do you know?

Practice.

You have to know what it’s like to have the spirit guiding you. Practice listening and taking action.

Counsel with your family and close leaders for support.

Write down your spiritual impressions and God will trust you to keep giving them to you.

Also, while possible, it’s unlikely the spirit will tell you to do something that is typically considered wrong. Sometimes it will, as in Nephi’s experience with Laban. But the exception does not make it a rule.

God has an order. His way is a way of order.

Be watchful, as it is foretold that in the last days, even the very elect will be deceived.

Satan is constantly trying to get us to follow him, for every time we follow him, we are not following Christ.
