Latter-day Lent

[Latter-day Lent] If You Don't Know, You're in Good Company - Week 6: Monday

There are several instances in the scriptures where even the prophets called of God don't know why they're doing what they are doing!

1 Nephi 13:22 - “I know not”

1 Nephi 19:3 - “which purposes are known unto the Lord”

Alma 37:11 - “now these mysteries are not yet fully made known unto me; therefore I shall forbear”

Alma 40:5 - “it mattereth not for God knoweth all these things; and it sufficeth me to know that this is the case”

Moses 5:6 - “I know not, save the Lord commanded me”

D&C 130:16 - “I was left thus, without being able to decide whether this coming referred to the beginning of the millennium or to some previous appearing, or whether I should die and thus see his face.”

Not knowing the full picture is not a problem. In fact, you're in good company.

If Nephi, Alma, Moses, and Joseph Smith (just a year before his death) all didn't know it all, and still took action, how much better can we feel about the same thing?

We can go confidently forward not knowing all the details and make decisions that will lead us back to Christ.

And to be honest, we might not want to know what we will face.

Nephi explains it clearly: "And I was led by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do." 1 Nephi 4:6.

Do you think if Nephi knew what he would have to do that he would have still been so gung-ho?

Certainly not.

He detailed his aversion to what God was telling him to do, because he knew God had forbidden it.

But there was an angel there telling him exactly what he needed to do.

He had to have an angel convince him in person it was the right step to take.

We're not being asked to do that.

We're being asked to conquer ourselves.

We don't know the battles we will face, and we probably don't want to.

Let's be confident in what the Lord has revealed and keep going forward, whatever our forward looks like.

Each of us has a different path forward than everyone else.

But we do have similarities.

Each of us is going to have to sacrifice our will for His.

Each of us is going to have to choose to follow Christ.

Start with choosing to follow Christ, wherever he leads you, and be willing to make any sacrifice He asks of you.

This is why you are doing Lent, to practice and prepare yourself for sacrifice.

Each time you do it, it builds the muscle of sacrifice.
