Helping Latter-day Saints learn about Lent through daily devotionals to help elevate their Easter celebrations in a higher and holier way.
We are just scratching the surface of the power of light in our modern technological advancements. The most common use that normal folks like me understand is fiber optic cables, which use class to transmit data at exceptionally high speeds. Well, exceptional for us right now. In each man and woman on earth, there is the Light of Christ (in Alma 28:14, Moro. 7:18, and D&C 88:7). But let's look closer at D&C 88:7 Joseph Smith received this "olive leaf, plucked from the tree of Paradise" in Kirtland, Ohio, in December 1832. In it, the Lord is talking about giving the Saints the second Comforter, which is the promise of eternal life. The promise of the "glory of the Celestial Kingdom" through Jesus Christ. 7. [The Light of] truth shineth. This is the light of Christ. As also he is in the sun, and the light of the sun, and the power thereof by which it was made. The light is the same power by which everything was made. The light of Christ is the power with which everything was created. Now, is this just symbolism, or is it really light? Well, in verse 13, it gives a little more information: Most of the time, when we think of the light of Christ, we think it is what makes people know good from evil, and it is, but this verse in D&C 88 tells us it is so much more than that. The light is in all things, it gives life to all things, and it is the law by which all things are given, even the power of God, himself! Light is powerful. This light is what gives God power! The light of Christ is both the thing that lets us all know what is good and evil and the thing that gives God His power. Wow! This is deep, powerful doctrine. The fiber optic cables, which are so powerful at transmitting light are simply containing light within a cable, giving it no creative properties, but just transmitting light. We start to scratch the surface a little bit when we think of lasers. Lasers are basically "ordered light" which means that through the use of mirrors, molecules are excited and then focused through a head to produce a beam of light powerful enough to cut through materials. But our human-envisioned versions of light are all used for destruction. The light of Christ, remember, "giveth light to all things." It is not used for destruction, but for creation. We use laser cutters to create things, but we create out of destruction, by cutting away things to make the whole. We use solar panels to capture light from the sun, and create energy from that light, but again, considering we have. Quantum computing should enable us to use light to solve complex problems. But all of these manmade creations do not come close to creating the power that is the Light of Christ.
