Latter-day Lent

[Latter-day Lent] Start Small - Week 5: Saturday

In Alaska, winters can be very long.

Days seem short, because they are.

In Fairbanks, Alaska, on the shortest day of the year, the sun rises at 10:49 am. And it sets at just 2:40 pm.

That's just shy of 4 hours of the sun being up. It barely peeks above the horizon.

But there's an amazing little lesson in this.

The sun is only up for a short amount of time.

Light chases out darkness.

The sky is light from the sun long before it rises, and still long after it sets.

Light from the city, stars, or moon, reflects off the white snow and makes it seem less dark.

You don't have to be perfect today.

You do need to strive for perfection.

But don't think you can do it all at once.

You can't run faster than you have strength.

But light will chase out darkness.

Start with a little thing.

One little thing that is a light in your life.

One tiny area where you can be better and invite the Light of Christ into your life.

You will see that that little light will chase out darkness.

That small candle will light up a dark room.

Even a match in a dark room provides light.

That small thing will give you strength and confidence to keep adding.

Each day, do that one little thing, then over time, add more.

Then you have two little pillars of light in your life.

Then add more.

Line upon line.

Eventually, you will have the strength and light you seek.
